Collegian Media Group shares the stories of Kansas State University and Manhattan with communities on and off campus. We host a journalism workshop for high school students, and sponsor a convention and contest for high school journalists.
Founded in 1946 as Student Publications Incorporated and renamed in 2012, Collegian Media Group is a private enterprise overseen by a board of directors composed of university students, faculty, and community professionals. The business received non-profit status in 1947 and operates as a 501(c)3 under IRS rules. Although its offices are on the Kansas State campus, Collegian Media Group is not affiliated with the university.
Most of its revenue derives from sales of advertising, yearbooks, tuition in its summer workshop, and other endeavors. A portion of its funding comes from the students of Kansas State.
We publish the thoughts and ideas of the campus in quotations, and our new logo says so. The “C” is formed by two quotation marks, representing the words of our sources. A circle represents openness, an ideal all news organizations strive for, and constancy.
The Collegian
The daily newspaper was founded in 1896 as The Students’ Herald, making it the oldest university newspaper in Kansas. The Collegian is the only morning daily newspaper in Manhattan, and publishes online throughout the day. Its content is reported, edited and produced by students, and students comprise the advertising staff.
Royal Purple
The nation’s most-decorated collegiate yearbook is the Royal Purple, which has been chronicling the stories of Kansas State every year since 1909. It has received more All-American ratings than any of its peers, and has won dozens of Gold Crown awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
Manhappenin’
Our newest publication, Manhappenin’ magazine, began in fall of 2016. This lifestyle publication features in-depth coverage of students and events, emphasizing the editors’ dedicated effort to cover topics within campus life.
Flint Hills Publications Workshop
Every July since 1960, high school students from around the Midwest converge in Manhattan for an intense, three-day workshop that puts them on the fast track to succeed on their journalism staffs back home. Track advisers are selected from the best high school journalism programs in Kansas and the mid-west.
Kansas Scholastic Press Association
High school journalism students flock to the Student Union in the fall for the annual KSPA convention, and return in the winter to compete to find out whose journalism meets the highest standards. Collegian Media Group is proud to sponsor and support these events on behalf of KSPA.
